user comment Test Your Lateral Thinking IQ Many of the solutions to the problems were not what I would call realistic

Lateral thinking is defined as what you do when you suppress your assumptions and are able to examine a problem free of bias. The puzzles in this book are advertised as problems where arriving at the solution requires lateral thinking. The problem with a true lateral thinking puzzle is that more than one solution is possible. Furthermore, an alternative solution is often more plausible. For example, problem 1.7 on page 29 is

In the mountains there is a cabin. Inside, three people are dead. The cabin is locked from the inside and there is no sign of a struggle or of any weapons. What happened?

The answer is given as

It is a plane cabin. The plane crashed, killing both pilots and the passenger.

When I read the problem, my solution was that they were using a portable heater of some kind and were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. While one could argue that the plane cabin could technically be considered correct, the idea that a plane cabin could survive a crash intact is a stretch.

Problem 1.12 on page 30 is

A bank manager was on his way to work one day. He was wearing a mask. Why?

The answer is given as

He was flying from New York to Switzerland for an important meeting. He wore the face-mask to exclude the light so that he could sleep on the flight.

When I read the problem, my answer was that it was the middle of winter in a very cold climate. He wore a mask to protect his face from frostbite. Once again, in my opinion, mine is a simpler and more realistic solution.
As I went through these puzzles, I didn't believe that my lateral thinking talents were being stretched. Some of these puzzles, such as the Barber Paradox of ancient Greece were ones that I have read many times before. Many of the others, such as the examples already given, had stated solutions that were hardly the most realistic ones.
