1. would you recommend the PR 11 Practice Tests?–is it any good?
2. i heard that Barron's is harder than the actual SAT test–i hear its good to over-practice with these hard questions, but do i really want to study for some questions that won't even be on the actual test (difficulty-wise)?
3. As for Gruber's , is it worth it b/c its harder than the actual test just like Barrons?
Feel they are very similar depending on edition. Forget exact wording of title of one Princeton SAT Prep book bought to help me on content in general, but seemed to accent skills and techniques of test taking. Looked at Barron stuff for other test and content seemed to be accented. got nieces a Princeton computer course on SAT prep, which was looked at about a week before giving it that seemed to accent skills and content, so would check public library to see if you could review it before buying, and see if extra money would be worth it. that was few years ago so don't know what offered now. look for one that offers most stuff like a computer CD. Personally a big fan of Standard Deviants DVD material, and they might offer SAT stuff, but review at all stuff you can get at library first.
I would actually recommend neither. Take it from a person who scored a 2250 on their SAT's. I used Kaplan book and the official college board one made by the test makers themselves and my score imporved dramatically. but if u will only buy one, buy the official sat guide book by college board it will help.

Does an 800 in Quantitative on the PowerPrep GRE mean that I can expect an 800 or close in the actual exam? I have also used Barron’s and Peterson’s and got scores ranging from 720 to 800 (when timed). Also I’m applying to some pretty competitive grad schools in the US for an MS in Mechanical Engineering and my 65% (2i) UK Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering translates to a 3.5 GPA (with a few skeleton’s- C’s and D’s). So would a high GRE quantitative score offset the modest GPA (to me its a good GPA but apparently its average for the all knowing MS engineering students on the online forums)?

Barron s SAT Book only
>> Funny stuff
This is the first SAT prep book with a sense of humor that I ve ever run into the grammar section is full of silly examples that add life to what is far too often a dry subject and some of the wrong answers in the multiple choice sections are pretty funny though you have to pay close attention to notice those
The verbal sections are great the book provides clear specific explanations for each answer the glossary in the middle of the book also defines EVERY word used in the sentence completion practice tests
>> Great Score Improvement Tool
I am very thankful to have purchased this book it has helped me a ton my first score on the SAT was a 2080 I used Barron s to study for my second SAT Today my score is 2250 that s a 170 point score improvement for a score that was already excellent
Pros
the book explains certain tactics these tactics are like strategies for test taking and for each individual subject some of them are common sense but many of them especially in the math portion are incredibly helpful
the book stresses guessing there s an entire chapter devoted to why students should guess on the SAT I was one of those students that would omit a question rather than risk a quarter point reduction this book had some eye opening cold hard statistics to show why students should guess
the math is pretty straight forward and well divided I had McGraw Hill s SAT 2009 for the first SAT the math was strong but it was not nearly as relevant as Barron s Barron s didn t even bother to teach students what types of math you ll see on the SAT it gives students just enough background information as well as test taking strategies
the practice tests are realistic in both scoring and content I m not sure whether or not Barron s used SAT licensed questions but you probably wouldn t know either way
Cons
the vocabulary section is useless It s one massive list of words there are hundreds of words the pull out vocabulary cards are kind of useful but the entire vocabulary section did not seem to stress vocabulary in context or word parts
the writing section was comprehensive and helpful but I very much preferred McGraw Hill s in depth worksheet method for writing
My suggestion is that if you need to raise your overall score your math score and your critical reading score you ll love Barron s on the other hand if you are focusing on your writing score or you need to work on your vocabulary you won t find Barron s as helpful
>> Product NEVER recieved

in this book it has practice tests which are actually older test. Problem is after I take the test I don’t know how to calculate my score to see if I “passed or failed”. it says in the book that the required score is: 174 Reading, 173 Writing and 173 Math. on the practice test there is 40 questions for Reading and Math and 38 for writing plus a essay. can anyone help me so I’ll know how to score my practice tests so i’ll know if i passed or failed?
