Horrible book with many mistakes
|
| Review Date: August 22, 2008 |

| I bought this book to prepare for the biology GRE exam. It has many mistakes in the book itself, both in the text and the questions. Also the computerized tests are not helpful at all. The actual test is on paper and learning how to use their practice software is not good preparation for the actual test. The software also contains many many mistakes in the answers. For example one answer is "Arc Gene Product." When I looked at the explanations I see they meant to put Src gene product! These people do not even check spelling before letting a product out the door to the consumer. Several answers were flat out wrong when compared to valid, reviewed textbooks, and sometimes questions would be marked wrong by the computer because the wrong answer was listed as correct. Seriously, total waste of time using this book. In addition I could not print my list of missed questions and when you use the review mode to check your test the computer does not tell you which ones you got right or wrong. You need to write down all the ones you missed, then go back and check then in explanation mode. Don't waste your money. |
Lots and lots of mistakes

If you are really rusty you probably don't want to get this book. It will confuse you. In addition to many spelling typos, there are conceptual errors. For example, one of the first questions you get asks you which of the answers is false. Their answer is "NADH is formed during the citric acid cycle." They imply NADH isn't formed, yet in the explanation they say NADH is reduced/formed in the citric acid cycle and oxidized/not formed during the oxidative phosphorylation step... HUH?! The explanation is opposite to the answer. Nice job REA.
It might be good if you feel like looking questionable things up all the time to see if you are correct and the book is incorrect... lol. I'd try out other books, if I were you.
The only good thing is the way some things are explained. Pretty straightforward. |
This book is terrible--DON'T BUY IT

| This book is horrendous. It is full of typos and some questionable biology. I have not yet taken the GRE exam, but I have compared the book to several real GRE practice exams and the book goes into way too much detail in some areas and completely skips other areas that are covered. I'm going to order Kaplan instead. |
A decent supplement

This book has a lot of typos. Such as "from" being spelled "form" in more than one place in just chapter two alone (the first chapter with actual info on it). There are multiple instances where important things like nucleotides are misspelled and other instances where two statments are hypocritical of eachother. This is a decent rubric but due to errors I find that you really need to re-look up just about anything you are going to study in here to make sure that it is actually true.
Honestly, though, most books like this- including Kaplan have these sorts of issues. Doing your own research, unfortunatly, is much better. |
WHAT A JOKE

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS JUNK.
I would give this book a ZERO out of five stars if I could! You can barely get through a page of this garbage without running into an egregious error in spelling, grammar, or, most importantly and most frequently, content. Entire diagrams are mislabeled, answers to practice questions within the review text are frequently wrong, and many answers to practice exam questions are also wrong (my peers and professors have confirmed this, so I'm not just crazy, I swear)! I honestly don't believe that anyone bothered to edit this book at all after the first draft was written, because some of the errors in there are just so blatant. Using this book to review from is dangerous, because if you trust their answers, you'll be learning WRONG INFORMATION.
Since this book full of mistakes and therefore useless to study from, I contacted REA to request a refund, and they refused to own up to the fact that they put out a shoddy product and did not give me my money back. What a scam! I feel like I've been cheated out of thirty bucks, and I hope the next book I get can actually teach me something. |
